169 If you’re a fan of UK Hip Hop or Grime, you’ve no doubt heard music from British producer, engineer, and singer 169. Best known for his extensive work with rapper/artist Dave, including his production of the smash hit “Thiago Silva”, and “Wanna Know” which was later remixed by Drake, 169 has made an indelible mark on the culture and sound behind this musical style, and he’s done it all using FL Studio. We’re thrilled to have him as a Power User, and took the opportunity to learn more about how he got to where he is. Dave – Wanna Know (prod. by 169 & Fraser T Smith) Tell us about yourself and how you got into music. Music was always playing in my household. I always wanted to recreate what I heard to the finest detail. I love to sing so I made beats for myself to sing on; but I also loved how others sounded on my beats. How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions? My older brother first showed FL Studio to me & we treated it like a fun pastime until I got a really good understanding of the software. Then, I realised how great I really was at making music. I’ve used multiple DAWs, but FL Studio works so efficiently: I can get what’s in my head onto the screen in a matter of seconds. |
Headie One – 18HUNNA (ft. Dave) (prod. by 169) Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with. With the use of FL only, I’ve mixed multiple Top 10 albums on the UK chart, produced multiple #1 songs and albums, and achieved over a billion streams of my music worldwide. Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use. I use a Dell XPS 17 4k – I produce & mix in Hifiman Sundaras & Sennheiser 660S headphones predominantly. I reference with Genelec 8010A monitors. 169 in the Studio Is there anything else you would like to tell us? |
