Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

I’m Camoflauge Monk, a music producer from Buffalo, New York. My journey into music began at a young age, inspired by the vibrant musical culture of my hometown. Growing up, I was immersed in a variety of genres, which fueled my curiosity and led me to explore beat-making and music production. Over time, this curiosity turned into a passion, and I’ve been dedicated to honing my craft ever since.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

I started using FL Studio early in my career because it was accessible and easy to learn. Its versatility and user-friendly design made it the perfect platform for experimenting with different sounds and improving my skills. FL Studio has since become the backbone of my production process. It’s more than just software; it’s the canvas where I bring my musical ideas to life.

Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with remarkable artists, especially in the underground hip-hop scene. Some of my most notable collaborations include Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Benny the Butcher—artists who, like me, hail from Buffalo. These collaborations have shaped my sound and contributed to the rise of the Griselda movement. I’ve also worked with artists from across the U.S., fusing my soulful, gritty production style with their unique voices to create tracks that stand out.

Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use.

My setup is pretty minimalist, focusing on quality over quantity. I rely on FL Studio as my primary DAW, a MIDI keyboard for composing melodies, and a pair of high-quality studio monitors for accurate sound. I also use a curated selection of VSTs and plugins to craft unique textures and tones. Keeping my setup simple allows me to prioritize the creative process over the technical aspects.

What is your top FL Studio tip for up-and-coming producers?

My biggest advice is to master the basics before diving into advanced techniques. Take the time to understand the fundamentals of sound design, mixing, and arrangement within FL Studio. Once you’re comfortable, start exploring different plugins and VSTs to develop your own sound. And don’t overlook the stock sounds and plugins—they can be incredibly powerful if you use them creatively.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

To all the aspiring producers out there: stay true to your sound and push the boundaries of your creativity. Trends come and go, but unique voices leave a lasting mark. Keep grinding, stay humble, and always be open to learning and evolving in your craft.
