Camper
Camper & Brandy When it comes to Hip Hop and R&B, Grammy Award-winning American producer Camper has done it all. Just have a look at his credits — Camper has worked with major artists like Mariah Carey, John Legend, Chris Brown, Big Sean, Mary J. Blige, and countless others. A talented singer/songwriter in his own right, Camper has used FL Studio in his productions from the beginning, and we were thrilled to catch up with him recently and learn more about his experience. Camper Vibing Tell us about yourself and how you got into music. I began to play the piano at age 6. I hated it at first, but I grew to love it by the time I was 13. I started taking producing seriously around 15 years old, and I got my first placement on Bow Wow and Omarion’s “Face Off” album — the song was called “Hood Star”. Growing up, I was still green to the whole industry, so my partner was doing everything at that time in terms of the business side. Then I got a manager, and I started to network with other people. One thing led to another, and I started branching out on my own. Being a natural musician, producing followed without a problem. It’s a great journey. Camper with John Legend |
Camper in the Studio How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions? It means everything because FL Studio is actually all I use. I was introduced to FL Studio at the age of 14 through a friend of mine named Infinity, and I’ve been using it ever since. Tell us about your work. Every time I let the music come to me; nothing is ever forced. Sometimes it’s frustrating because it’s hard to capture everything I’m thinking at once — there are always numerous ideas coming to me, but one thing for certain is I’m passionate about my art. Camper on the Keys Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use. I have my own studio. The production environment is very relaxed and welcoming, hence the “Welcome to the Camp” LED sign in the studio. I also have a few live instruments in the room, like a Grand Piano and Korg MS200, which are two essential instruments for me. Camper in the Studio Is there anything else you would like to tell us? |
