Cheese
Jason “Cheese” Goldberg American producer, songwriter, and audio engineer Jason “Cheese” Goldberg has made himself a name as the go-to engineer for much of the Hip Hop world. From working extensively with artists like NBA Youngboy to Kendrick Lamar on the hit “goosebumps”, Cheese has seemingly done it all. While he’s worked with several DAWs, we’re thrilled that FL Studio has become a frequent part of his process, and are glad to welcome him to our Power User list. YoungBoy Never Broke Again – Kacey Talk (prod. by Cheese) Tell us about yourself and how you got into music. My name’s Jason, but my friends call me “Cheese.” I’m an engineer/producer from Los Angeles. I got into music when I was a kid, but it wasn’t until high school that I started writing, recording, and producing songs. I guess there was just something about expressing an emotion, and feeling that emotion played back, that has continued to inspire me throughout the years. How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions? I started with FL Studio for the sound originally. It’s been a big part of the production process. Some of my artists use it to record in, and a lot of my friends create with it. So, I wanted to understand it. I learned to use it as tool to keep everything consistent and in one place. Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with. I think if I were to go through the catalog of work that I’ve been a part of, there would be a string of melodies and rhythms that feel beautiful, whether they are hard-hitting or melodic. The list of artists I’ve worked with over the years is extensive, but most notably, I’m known for the work I’ve done with NBA YoungBoy, Pop Smoke, Rich The Kid, Travis Scott, and Kendrick Lamar. |
FL STUDIO | Recording Masterclass: Back to School with Jason “Cheese” Goldberg Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use. Anywhere. That’s the method. I spent years in the studios. I came up pretty traditionally. I trained my ears, I learned the gear and the etiquette. Once I decided to go out on my own, I got rid of the walls. No matter where we end up, I bring the same level of professionalism and quality with me. I am the studio. A backpack & a Pelican case. A Mac Mini, Apollo, Sphere L22, and a set of Neumann KH 80s. Whether it’s a hotel room, Airbnb, tour bus, green room, or studio – these environments fuel experience and that experience captures the moment. My production environment can be anywhere. Cheese in the Studio What is your top FL Studio tip for up-and-coming producers? If I were to make a beat and send it to an artist, and the artist likes the beat and makes a song, I would export all playlists as tracks with master processing to mix. If you A/B the stems and the bounce you sent, they should sound the same. Also, spend the time on a vocal template. You can use raw vocals to dial in all the processing. That will change almost immediately with every artist, but it’s a good place to start. Making the song and working with the artist is a lot of fun and you want to be able to do both. |
