FORTHENIGHT

FORTHENIGHT

FORTHENIGHT, out of Canada, is a name we’ve started hearing everywhere — from his production on tracks by Bad Bunny, SZA, and Don Toliver, to recently reaching #8 on the Billboard R&B Producers chart. After learning he uses FL Studio to make his music, we took the opportunity to learn more about his background and process.

Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

My name is FORTHENIGHT, a Sound Designer/ Producer from a small city outside of Toronto, Canada named Brampton. For many years, music has always been a big part of my life. As a young kid, I always loved listening to different types of genres. This eventually led me to further explore how beats were created, which opened my eyes to music production.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

I was introduced to FL Studio through YouTube at the age of 15. It all began by consistently watching tutorials on the basics of how to DJ which led me to watch recommended videos on how you can create beats on FL Studio. Instantly, my curiosity grew and slowly transitioned myself from DJing to music production. To me, FL Studio plays a big part in my production and sound designing. It allows me to express my creativity to the fullest, by using various FL plug-ins when making melodies and the use of its convenient blocks/grids when programming drums.

Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with.

I consider my work to be experimental, mysterious, and melodic. This has given me the opportunity to work with a variety of artists such as Bad Bunny, Summer Walker, SZA, Don Toliver, and Young Nudy to name a few.

Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use.

My production environment is always changing depending on how I’m feeling, or where I am. When I’m at my home studio, I love experimenting with various analog synths and guitar pedals such as the Juno 106, Prophet 600, Cooper FX, and Red Panda. This allows me to maximize my full creativity. However, when I’m travelling or just on the go I love trying out weird effects and sound plugins.
