Hiss South Korean musician Hiss is one of the most notable beatboxers in the world. Best known as runner-up in the Grand Beatbox Battle 2017 and winner in the Asia Beatbox Championship 2019, Hiss is also a skilled producer and a member of the groups Beatpella and HypeerTime. Ever since he began experimenting with music production, Hiss has used FL Studio as his DAW of choice, and we’re pleased to welcome him as one of our most unique Power Users. Hiss – Dream Again [Beatbox United 22 Wildcard] Tell us about yourself and how you got into music. Hello. I’m Hiss, a producer and member of the electronica music production duo HypeerTime and the voice group ‘BEATPELLA HOUSE’. In 2014, I stepped into the music scene at the age of 14 through beatboxing and started producing in 2015 using FL Studio. How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions? I love beatboxing and electronica music. I got into MIDI because I wanted to express another style of music that beatboxing couldn’t, and that’s when I discovered FL Studio, the most popular DAW for electronica producers. The skills I developed in FL Studio as a hobby, like gaming, have allowed me to make a living as a musician, making beatbox albums, producing electronica, creating content, and more.
Hiss Performing Live Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with. FL Studio has allowed me to collaborate with many beatboxers. In 2018, I released the beatbox multitrack single “Jumpin'” with American beatboxers Gene Shinozaki and Amit and Australian beatboxer Codfish, and the beatbox single “If Only” with French beatboxers Alexinho, Colaps, and River. Now I’m using it for electronica tracks as HypeerTime. |
Hiss, Alexinho, Colaps, River’ – If only Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use. I use headphones at home and a mix of speakers and headphones in the studio. My preferred headphones are Audio-Technica’s ATH-M50X, Shure’s SRH940, and Sennheiser’s HD-600. For my speakers, I use the GENELEC 8351 (with 7350) and GENELEC 8040B.
Hiss’ Studio Setup What is your top FL Studio tip for up-and-coming producers? I’ve tried other DAWs through other producers I know. While each has its pros and cons, I’ve found FL Studio to be the best for the type of electronica music that I produce, because I feel it has very well-developed sample processing techniques and automation features often used in electronica music. FL Studio’s convenient features allow you to realize the music you want to make. Is there anything else you would like to tell us? It’s very easy to use, with new updates every time and more and more features. I’m grateful to FL Studio for the important role it plays in sustaining my musical life, and I hope that anyone who wants to get into music will find it easy and fun to do so.
