Mortão

Mortão

Mortão is one of the most prolific producers in the Brazilian music scene. With records spanning the Hip Hop, Reggae, and Ragga genres, he has had an undeniable impact on music from that part of the world. We were pleased to learn that he’s been using FL Studio from the beginning — check out our interview with him below!

Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

Since childhood, I was already interested in old family vinyls, and parallel to that, I discovered Rap music. Its heavy, often dark, beats soon fascinated me — I remember trying to loop (on cassette tape) some instrumental beats from songs and listen to them.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

When I was 13 years old, my parents bought a computer, which at that time belonged to the whole family and stayed in the living room. That same year, during Christmas 2002, I installed FL 3. From then on, I started to believe more and more that it was possible to fulfill my dream of making music.

Today I see that my entire career as a music producer was shaped through FL Studio, and its ongoing updates have made me keep it as the only DAW for my work.

Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with.

Between 2005 and 2013, I was both an Emcee and a Producer. I created the VMG label and started working with several regional artists in Rap, Reggae, and Ragga music. I also had the at that time to work with renowned artists such as Marcelo D2, RAPadura, DonL, Suave Jigaboo, Dina Di, and SpeedFreaks.

From 2013 onward, I decided to invest more in the production side. I took some courses and delved into the piano. In 2015, I met the rapper Nocivo Shomon, and over the years we created thousands of works. In the RUA project I had the opportunity to work with several names such as RZO, SNJ, MV Bill, Faccao Central, Rincon Sapiência, Viela 17, Face da Morte, Guindart 121, Thiagao, and Kamilla CDD.

Additionally, at the invitation of the ADL group, we produced “Favela Vive 3”. I believe that these 2 are the biggest Brazilian projects of a social nature that have united iconic artists from different generations.

Increasingly expanding my musical range, I thank God to have been able to work with an extensive list of renowned artists including Pericles, Mr. Catra, Filipe Ret, Djonga, Negra li, Froid, Cinthya Luz, Dan Lellis, Fabio Brazza, Mano Fler, Melk, Mc MM, Lennon, Lucas Lucco, 1Kilo, Sant, Zetre, Projota, Main Flow, Rashid, Vietna, Primarily , Ponto de Equilibrio, Detentos do Rap, Felp22, Choice, Menor do chapa, Bó do Catarina, DBS, Neto LX, Ananda, Mc BMO, Mc Jhony, Mcs Jhowzinho and Kadinho, Ze Felipe, Mc Magal, Mc GP, Mc Topre , Dfideliz, Qualy Haikaiss, Mc Lozin, etc.

In 2018, I was honored to produce beats for a performance by Fabio Brazza on the TV program Altas Horas (Rede Globo), and in one of his freestyles, he impressed the notable artists who were present: Anitta, Raça negra, Claudia Raia, Ney Latorraca.

I’ve also worked on the soundtrack for the brand Chilli Beans, and in 2020 and 2021, I produced the tracks for 2 DVDs by Humorista/Trapper Murilo Couto, shown by Globoplay, in addition to his songs such as Emicouto (Trapioca) and clips shown on the show The Noite com Danilo Gentili (SBT).

Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use.

The studio is my second home, a quiet place, where I spend most of my time producing alone — I believe that’s the only way I can do my best. I work with a MacBook Pro, Apollo Twin UA, Avalon 737, Neumann Bcm705, AT4040, Korg Kronos X, Yamaha Mox6, Korg Prophecy 37, Akai MPC Live, Yamaha HS80m Pair, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, Yamaha MG10XU Mixer, and FL Studio as my DAW.

Mortão in the Studio

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

I would like to say that it is an honor to be part of the team of artists recognized by the company that not only changed my life, but also brought a new and accessible way of making music even in a home environment. This without a doubt revolutionized the entire music industry to enable what we have today: huge rewards for homemade records. Undoubtedly, Image-Line with its FL Studio software plays a major role in this. Thank you!
