Sam Gellaitry
Sam Gellaitry At just 17, Sam Gellaitry began making waves on SoundCloud with his experimental, Trap-inspired beats. Since then, the Scottish artist and producer has blossomed into a prolific global phenomenon, writing and singing on his own music, and drawing inspiration from the legendary artists he used to sample. Having performed at Coachella, having his song “LONG DISTANCE” used in a Super Bowl advertisement for Diet Coke, and much, much more, it is clear that Sam has built a platform that will be around for a long time to come. And, of course, we are incredibly proud that he has done all of this while utilizing FL Studio as his DAW of choice. Read on to learn more about Sam’s story. Sam Gellaitry – HOME Tell us about yourself and how you got into music. My name is Sam Gellaitry! I’ve been captivated by music for as long as I can remember, but I started sampling disco/funk tracks at the age of 10 after becoming obsessed with Daft Punk. How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions? I first used FL Studio at the age of 12 after my brother told me there was a software program where you could compose music from scratch, which sounded like magic at the time. I still feel the same way about it — FL Studio feels like an extension of my being. Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with. I got discovered on SoundCloud at 17 for my experimental beats. They had a strong trap influence which was a fairly new and buzzing genre at the time. The month after, I played my first DJ set with Soulection and signed to XL Recordings the year after. Since then, I went from just making beat-based music to a complete transition into writing songs and singing on my own tracks in 2021. That has been my focus ever since, and I’m currently working on an album inspired very much by the samples I used to create with right at the start. |
Sam Gellaitry – Assumptions Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use. I use a desktop PC and an RME Fireface UFX II. For vocals, recently I’ve been plugging in a standard M58 into my Neve 1073 as my room isn’t soundproofed enough for my Neumann u87, but it does the trick! I recently got an ASUS Zenbook Pro laptop with dual touchscreens, and its workflow with FL Studio is insane. I use the step sequencer on the top screen as if it’s a real drum machine. I can activate and deactivate steps with a touch, and then I have the mixer on the bottom screen SSL style — super fun! Sam Gellaitry – Duo What is your top FL Studio tip for up-and-coming producers? Stick with it. Find your own way through everything — it may take longer, but that’s how you truly craft a signature sound. Don’t rush to learn theory and trust in your instincts. You are also in safe hands as FL Studio has the best updates out of any software company I’ve come across. Is there anything else you would like to tell us? |
