Yung Lan; Impact of Music Production in TN on Perspectives with Alana McLaughlin

Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

My name is Yung Lan and I’m from Cumberland, Virginia. I’ve been producing since I was 12 years old. I grew up in a musical household with my mom’s side of the family singing and playing in the church. I started producing for people in my high school, and started taking it seriously after I graduated. I got signed to Warner Chappell Music in 2015 after I had three records on Fetty Wap‘s first album. Shortly thereafter, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue my musical ambitions. After moving to Atlanta, I started working with all of the biggest artists in hip-hop, ranging from Lil Wayne to Roddy Ricch to NBA Youngboy. I started signing producers in 2017 as a way to help the younger generation break into the game and get them placements. I’ve been nominated for two GRAMMYs, and the records I have produced have sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

In 2011, I downloaded FL Studio for the first time. Prior to that, I was using all hardware like the Akai MPC 2000 and the Yamaha Motif. Being able to just use my laptop and VSTs made production so much easier and way more efficient. Ever since then, I’ve been exclusively using FL Studio.

Some of my biggest records include “RGF Island” by Fetty Wap, “Bacc Seat” by Roddy Ricch, “Booty” by Blac Youngsta, “Tic Toc” by 6ix9ine & Lil Baby, and “Ranada” by NBA Youngboy. I’ve been blessed to have worked with most of the biggest artists in the game.

Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use.

I currently use the latest version of FL Studio and plugins such as Omnisphere and Kontakt. When tracking, I use Pro Tools and a Neumann TLM 103 mic.
