Sid De La Cruz

Tell us about yourself & how you got into music?

Hi, my name is Sid De La Cruz and I am a film composer and record producer. I got into music when I was back in college. I was actually a pre-med student. In order to fulfill my class requirements, I had to take an art class so I decided to take guitar. I found myself paying more attention to my guitar class than my biology class. So the following semester I took another music class and I soon realized that music is what I wanted to do. I went on to get my Bachelors degree in music composition at San Jose State University.

After graduating college, I got a fellowship and got my Master degree in music composition at Claremont Graduate University. During my last semester, I was simultaneously going to UCLA to study film scoring. I was very fortunate to have been awarded the Jerry Goldsmith BMI Film Scoring Scholarship. During my last semester of studying, I landed an internship with record producers Sean & Kadis, who at the time were producing a hip-hop group called “Audio Push” that were signed to Interscope Records. After graduating, both UCLA and Claremont, I landed an internship with at Remote Control Productions (Hans Zimmer) and with composer Trevor Morris. After a couple months of interning, I was hired by Trevor Morris.

After working with Trevor for a while, I left the studio and started to find work for myself. Now, I work on movies, video games, a little bit in Tv and produce music for different recording artists. I also like to DJ.

What attracted you to FL Studio vs other DAWs?

That’s simple:

FL Studio is very user friendly. Because of that, it allows me to get my ideas across and not have to stumble on trying to figure out how to do things.

You don’t need additional hardware to run the DAW, such as a USB dongle

The user interface is by far the most attractive interface I have seen in a DAW. Now, that may not mean a whole lot on the surface but actually, spending long hours with a DAW, especially one that has an attractive user interface can actually be inspiring and help stay motivated & focused

Lifetime FREE updates. I don’t think there is a DAW out in the market that gives free lifetime updates.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

I was 1st introduced to FL Studio back when it was called Fruity Loops. I think I came across the very 1st version of Fruity Loops, version 1.0. It gave me access to create music, just like the music I heard on the radio. It was actually not that difficult to use and sounded great.

Tell us about your production environment and toys?

I am using the Akai mpk88 keyboard, with a pair of Mackie monitors and a Mackie sub woofer, several acoustic (nylon and steel) guitars, electric guitar, electric bass, a set of microphones, a trumpet and extra midi keyboards, just in case. When I travel, I use the Akai MPK Mini II keyboard.

I like to have a very clean and easy to navigate studio so, all my toys and gadgets are pretty much in the box.
