Alex Lustig

Alex Lustig has carved out a unique space in the production world. Not only has he produced hits for the likes of Drake, Young Thug, and many others in Hip Hop, but he also has his own highly successful artist project where he makes more ambient music. We were curious about how he found his path and what his production setup looks like, and here are his responses.

Tell us about yourself and how you got into music.

My mom pushed me to play piano at an early age. I continued to play classical piano until I was about 18 and had even done a few concerts as well. At around 18, I decided to pursue producing music as it became clear it was my passion.

I have always loved rap music, but it wasn’t until I started suffering from anxiety that I started listening to ambient and chill music too. This is why my work is inspired by both rap and ambient music.

How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?

When I was 13, my science teacher told me about this software to make beats on called Fruity Loops. I’ve been obsessed with making beats on it ever since. FL Studio, to me, is such a solid program because it is so clear and easy to use. Whenever I have an idea I want to create, I can get it done in FL in no time. I have been using FL Studio for about 14 years now and don’t see myself using any other software.

Tell us about your work and some of the artists you have worked with.

I have worked with artists in different camps like OVO (Drake, Partynextdoor, Baka Not Nice), Young Stoner Life (Young Thug, Gunna), but also worked on projects for Don Toliver, Tinashe, Toosii, and plenty of other artists. Besides working for others, I also have an artist project where I produce more chill and ambient music.

Tell us about your production environment and the gear you use.

I always carry my laptop with FL Studio and my Apogee Duet with me. Occasionally I will use a keyboard to start creating melodies. I have a set of Adam Audio A7X’s at home and also use the Sennheiser HD 600 headphones. From time to time, I will use my OP-1 and some analog gear like my Moog Minilogue.
