Tell us about how you got into music ?
We are Reinhard (Camo) & Markus (Krooked), both from Austria, and been making music, mainly Drum & Bass, for about 10 years now.
It’s hard to remember how we got into music, but mainly it all happened in the early teenager times whilst hanging out with some older friends. They always seemed to listen to cool music. Music that was not just in the charts. They introduced us to the first cool Drum & Bass artists aswell.
Tell us about the first contact with electronic music?
Markus: My dad listened to all kinds of music. Mostly Genesis and the whole (Prog-)Rock rock genre. But I remember him coming back one day from the store with a CD by Jean Michel Jarre, called “Oxygene”. I was about 8 years old, so I had no idea what kind of music it was, but I loved it. It was great being reintroduced into electronic music a few years later. Being able to find out more about the whole genre through the internet opened a whole new world for me.
How did you start using FL Studio & what does it mean to your productions?
A friend showed me what he made in FL Studio when it was called Fruity Loops (that was around 2004). I was amazed how intuitive it was. It felt like I could immediately understand the GUI behind at, and it seemed to have a very quick and easy workflow.
Since then we have been hooked on it. It’s the only DAW we are using. We are not working in one studio, we have 2 separated studios. So we need to send project files back and forth all the time. The Zipped Loop File function is what makes this very easy for us.
Tell us about your production environment & toys ?
As mentioned above, we have 2 studios – with the exact same setup. We think it can be a real creative barrier to sit in a studio together. The PCs have the same specs and software-wise we run the same versions of FL Studio and VST plug-ins.
We use the Klein & Hummel O300 as our main monitors in both studios, running through a Prismsound Lyra 2 for the most detailed sound you can get. As our main reference we have Audeze LCD3 & LCD2 headphones. The mono capability of our mixdowns is being checked through the Avantone Mixcube.
Vocals are being recorded through the Neumann TLM 102.
We only use soft synths. Hardware synthesizers are great, but we love a quick and easy workflow. And you can automate everything on a softsynth in a way you could never work with a hardware synth. If you want a soft synth to sound like it is coming from a hardware synthesizer though, the right amount of saturation/tube and a few other plugins do wonders to it.
Occasionally we like to use FX pedals, like the Digitech Talker and the Rocktron Banshee 2.
