We see a lot of confusion on our forums and in the social media about digital audio, particularly the artifacts created during Analog to Digital (recording) and Digital to Analog (playback) conversion. So it is with some excitement we re-upload the 'Digital Show & Tell' video by Monty of Xiph.org, the developers of the open-source Ogg Vorbis codec supported by FL Studio.
Watch to learn more about A/D, D/A, sample-rates, bit-depth, dither & more
Monty presents a series of well thought out, real-rime, demonstrations of sampling and sample payback including the effects of - sample-rate, bit-depth and dither. Monty uses both digital analysis tools and vintage analog bench equipment to walk us through the principles of Digital to Analog and Analog to Digital conversion.
With a flurry of videos we welcome you to the FL Studio Guru blog. We will be sharing with you:
Tutorial videos that cover the commonly asked questions in Looptalk. We’ll try to keep these around 3 minutes.
Top Tip videos that cover those ‘Power user’ shortcuts and features that really make FL Studio fly.
Blogs about the music production, technology, software and anything else we think is cool and relevant to the producing musician.
Today I’d like to alert you to a great video about Audio Myths posted on YouTube by Ethan Winer (below left) of RealTraps (makers of sound control solutions for studios). Ethan & co-presenters cover such issues as placebo effects in audio, loudness vs quality, 'scam' equipment, dithering, expensive vs cheap soundcards and more...oh yes it's about 58 minutes long, so get the popcorn out :)
Of particular interest to many home producers will be the section on Cheap vs Expensive soundcards, that starts at 41m:18s if you want to jump to it. Surely you need to drop $2000 on a 'professional' audio inerface if you want quality audio recordings, right?
The video contains excerpts from a workshop given at the 2009 Audio Engineering Society conference. You can learn more about the AES on their website. Enjoy!
